Sharad Pawar steps down as chief of the Nationalist Congress Party

During a book launch, Sharad Pawar stepped down as chief of NCP. Following his announcement, several NCP leaders and workers demanded to reverse his decision.

Veteran politician Sharad Pawar Tuesday stepped down as the chief of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). He said; He will not contest any election in the future.

Tuesday, during a book launch, Sharad Pawar announced that he had decided to step down as NCP president and will not be contesting elections in the future. He said, ‘Even though I am stepping down from the post of president, I am not retiring from public life’.

Pawar, at the launch of the second edition of his autobiography, ‘Lok Maze Sangati’, announced his decision. Following his announcement, NCP workers and leaders chanted slogans demanding that the NCP supremo change his decision.

In a press statement, Mr Pawar said, “I have three years left of Rajya Sabha membership in the parliament. During this period, I will focus on Maharashtra and India.” Also added, “I started my political career on May 1, 1960. On May 1 2023, I decided to step down as a resident of the Nationalist Congress Party.”

Pawar has not mentioned any name of his successor and said that a committee would be formed by NCP leaders to decide who will be given the role of NCP chief.

Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole said Mr Pawar will remain in public life till his last breath. However, Pawar’s resignation “Will not impact Maha Vikas Aghadi. We hope that the new president of NCP will stay with the alliance”.
